Yo, I’m Syd! I’m a senior in Engineering Physics going for an ASI in Space and Planetary Science/Engineering. I was the Social Chair for Spring ’22 and now I’ve moved up to be your new President. I have too many hobbies including various kinds of art, reading, board games and table top rpg’s, and video games. I’m really looking forward to seeing oSTEM grow and to building more connections with students, faculty, and sponsors. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions and feedback for oSTEM!

VP of Campus Events

Hey, my name is Andrea and I’m currently a Sophomore in Mechanical Engineering. This year I’m serving as oSTEM’s VP of Campus Event! This means you’ll see me around Pedestrian Plaza a lot this year. I like to spend my free time reading, napping, and just generally getting outside. In addition, I grew up around Tulsa, OK so the mountains here in CO are a real treat. Can’t wait to see you all around!

Neil Walsh (he/him/his)

VP of Community Outreach

Hi, I’m Neil, and I am a junior majoring in computer science. I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which is super-hot and humid, so I am very glad to be here. I do miss the food every now and then. I am the social chair for oSTEM so, I help plan the different social events throughout the year. I really enjoy camping, hiking, board games, and audiobooks. I am excited to meet and get to know all of you and hope to see y’all all at some of our social events.

Treasurer

Hiya! I’m a second-year Computer Science student and Treasurer for oSTEM. I grew up in Colorado and have lived here my entire life; it’s a lovely state out in the middle of nowhere. I’m also involved with High Grade, OreSec, as well as a *few* other things here at Mines. I enjoy socializing, video games, cooking, and long walks out in nature. Feel free to ask or talk about anything with me, from CS major/career advising questions to discussing which upcoming Genshin character is the hottest (yes this is an open invite). Come say hi, I don’t bite!

Grad Student Liason

Hello! My name is Joey Lovato and I go by he/him/his pronouns. I am a first-year grad student studying Computer Science in a 5-year combined program (if all goes well, I’ll get my masters in May!). As an undergrad, I participated in Band, McBride, the Harvey Scholarship Exec Board, and TA’ed many semesters for CS courses. This year, I am adjunct faculty for CS@Mines teaching my favorite undergrad course, Data Structures. Outside of school, I enjoy writing, brewing coffee, weightlifting, playing the piano, writing music, and undertaking deeply philosophical conversations with anyone who dares. I am so excited to support oSTEM this semester. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Mary Elliot (She/Her/Hers)

oSTEM Chapter Advisor and Director of Residence Life

I was born and raised in Golden, CO and after spending time in the Midwest earning my MA in Higher Education Administration (University of Iowa) and working in higher education for 10 years at Washington University in St. Louis, I finally made my way back to Golden to work here at Mines! I have been at Mines since 2014 and love my role as the Director of Residence Life and Housing. I also love that my role allows me to take the time to be one of the advisors to oSTEM. As an advisor to this group of amazing students, I learn every day what it means for students to truly support and care for one another and each day I am challenged to be the best ally that I can be to our LGBTQ+ community here on campus and outside of our community as well. I have the honor of co-facilitating our Safe Zone training program with some of our talented leadership and helping to educate our students, staff and faculty on how they can be the best allies they can be. Advising oSTEM is the most rewarding, humbling and fun things I get to do here at Mines and I am grateful every day to be involved in this organization.

Josh Ramey

Josh Ramey

oSTEM Chapter Advisor and CBE Professor

I’m an associate teaching professor in the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and I am interested in improving undergraduate biology education with research interests in synthetic biology and genetic engineering. I grew up in New Mexico and obtained my PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where I also explored DNA replication and cell-cycle regulation as a post-doc. I also have a background in industry where I worked as a scientist at OPX Biotechnologies, focused on the genetic engineering of E.coli to produce a precursor to acrylic acid.

It is important to me to be a proud and visible member of the LGBTQ+ community at Mines. As an advisor with oSTEM, I am continuously inspired by young queer scientists and engineers as we work together to foster an environment of inclusivity at Mines.

Outside the classroom, I love hiking in the mountains of Colorado and traveling with Justin, my wonderful husband of 5 years. I also have a wonderful golden-doodle that looks like a muppet named Chloe.
