What is the
Mines Space Robotics Challenge?

The Mines Space Robotics Challenge is a weekend-long event aimed at developing first-year students from underrepresented groups interested in pursuing careers in aerospace or other space sciences. The competition is modeled from the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program and consists of an inclusive aerospace panel, a robotics competition, and a team presentation to industry professionals.

OUR MISSION

To increase the participation and retention of gender and ethnic minorities in aerospace through hands-on experiences, building relationships with like-minded students, and networking with industry professionals.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

Increase the participation and retention of underrepresented groups in aerospace

Foster communication between prospective aerospace students and industry professionals

Develop critical skills in teamwork, communication, and engineering design

Build a community of like-minded students through shared experiences

First-Year Students

The event is aimed at supporting all first-year students who are interested in pursuing careers in aerospace and space sciences by helping you:

  1. begin building a network of industry professionals and like-minded students
  2. develop resume-worthy skills in preparation for career day (it’s never too early!)
  3. learn more about different paths to careers in aerospace

No robotics experience? No problem! If you’re interested in aerospace, want to meet amazing students and industry professionals, get some free swag, and (possibly) win some amazing awards, register now!

Event Schedule

Team Building: Thursday, Sept. 2nd

Get to know your team in preparation for the weekend event! A cohesive and fully functional team is essential to project success. (optional, but highly recommended!)

Day 1: Friday, Sept. 3rd, 2021

4:30 PM – 7:00 PM MT
The event kick-off features a diverse panel of aerospace professionals from all backgrounds. Check-in and meet your team while learning more about various aerospace careers and enjoying free refreshments.

Day 2: Saturday, Sept. 4th, 2021

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM MT
Day 2 will cover all the information your team needs to start designing and building your rover. The remainder of the day will be work time in collaboration with your team mentors.

Day 3: Sunday, Sept. 5th, 2021

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM MT
In the morning your team will add the finishing touches to your rover and presentation in preparation for the final competition in the afternoon. The event will close with a keynote and awards presentation.

EVENT VOLUNTEERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to be in an underrepresented student group (AAPI, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, etc) to participate?

No, all first-year students are able to participate in the event.

Can only freshmen participate?

All first-year students (students who have attended Mines for 2 semesters or less) including traditional freshmen, transfer students, and international students are able to participate in the event. If you transferred to Mines during the Spring or Summer of 2021, you are able to participate.

How much does it cost to participate?

 Nothing! The event is free to all participating students. We only ask that you commit to being present and participating in the entire event.
