About

Our History

A Capella @ Mines is a new collection of old A Capella groups. We are 3 main vocal groups with several offshoot quartets focused on performing fun and exciting music.

The first group to be created, the Harmonic Miners, is a male-voiced barbershop group that has been on campus since 1913. Over the last 111 years, Harmonic Miners have taken many names and faces, but the spirit of the barbershop group has stayed the same from its inception to the modern day.

The second group, the Melodic Miners, is a female-voiced barbershop group that appeared in the 40s to 50s. This group was started as an offshoot of the Sweet Adelines, a women’s barbershop organization that encouraged women to start singing barbershop music in a male-dominated field. The group continues to hold the spirit of singing strong.

The newest group, Miner Dissonance, is only 11 years old. It is a mixed a capella group created as a passion project between 8 members of the Mines choir. It has since grown into a thriving a capella group, even being able to start competing in surrounding A Capella competitions.

A Capella @ Mines is just a new face to these old names in the Mines community. We hope to keep bringing music to Mines campus for years to come.
